About the Position
The City of San Bernardino is seeking an experienced Maintenance Worker to support the Operations and Maintenance Division in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, sidewalks, gutters, storm drains, storm basins, street signs and related public works facilities. The ideal candidate will be service oriented have extensive experience and have a valid California Class B Commercial License.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to service, demonstrated through a track record of excellence in construction, maintenance, and repair of essential amenities like streets, curbs, sidewalks, and storm drains. The ideal candidate will bring a wealth of experience to the table, navigating diverse maintenance challenges with skill and efficiency. Moreover, possessing a valid California Class B Commercial License.

The City of San Bernardino is a community rich in history and cultural diversity. Influences of Native Americans, Mexican settlers, and Spanish missionaries can still be seen throughout the City today. From 1810 to the present, San Bernardino has been recognized for its scenic beauty and strategic location. Today, the City of San Bernardino serves as the county seat and is the largest city in the County of San Bernardino with a population of 222,203.

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  1. Breaks and removes asphalt and concrete pavement/curbs; digs, shovels, hauls and loads soils, sand, gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials; patches potholes; lays and rakes, rolls and irons hot asphalt; installs shoulder barricades and street guard rails.
  2. Performs rough and finish concrete work; removes and hauls damaged concrete from street curbs, sidewalks and gutters; assists in fabricating, utilizing and removing concrete forms; mixes, sets, trowels and finishes concrete and cement.
  3. Removes and/or paints over graffiti on private and public property
  4. Identifies and reports debris, illegal dumping, trash, weeds and overgrown brush in City streets and rights-of-way; sweeps and shovels debris and litter and loads trucks; cleans storm drains and storm basins; empties loads at dump sites.
  5. Operates various types and sizes of trucks and motorized equipment, such as dump trucks, box pavers, rollers, patch trucks, boom trucks, compactors and reclaimers; inspects vehicles and reports maintenance as required.
  6. Operates air compressor and pneumatic air tools, including spaders, tampers, jackhammers, break­ing guns, blowers and concrete saws; operates hand and power tools and equipment for a variety of trades; maintains tools and equipment in proper working order.
  7. May drive vehicles to work sites and set up barricades and traffic control; serves as flag person and directs traffic in roadways to protect maintenance crews.
  8. Assists in installing traffic signs.
  9. Cleans up work sites upon completion of job.
  10. Assists in preparing records and reports of work performed.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:
  1. Techniques and materials used in the maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains and related facilities.
  2. Maintenance, adjustment and utilization of power and hand tools related to street mainten­ance/repair.
  3. Laws and regulations pertaining to work site safety and traffic control; proper placement of cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites.
  4. Safe work methods.
Ability to:
  1. Follow work direction and maintenance procedures at work sites.
  2. Operate assigned equipment and vehicles safely and follow safe work practices and procedures.
  3. Adjust and perform preventive maintenance and make minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
  4. Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.
  5. Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  6. Keep basic written records of work performed.
  7. Read and understand street maps and written instructions.
  8. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work.
  9. Respond to call-out for emergencies as required; handle emergency situations as directed.

Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and one year of skilled experience in public works related construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
Class B Commercial for Maintenance Worker II. A Class B Commercial license with Airbrake Endorsement required for some assignments.

City Benefits:
The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
  • Retirement – Participation in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Classic members with less than 6 months separation: CalPERS 2% at 55, single highest year plan. New members, CalPERS 2% at 62, three highest year average plan.
  • Health Insurance – Monthly contribution of $715.00 (Employee Only), $1,377.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,841.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual “Health Insurance Waiver Stipend” of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave – Vacation beginning at 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually, 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance – The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
